How to Spot Phishing Emails and Texts
October 30, 2026
Phishing messages are fake emails or texts made to look like they come from a bank, delivery company, or store you trust. Their goal is to get you to click a link, open an attachment, or share a password. Here is how to spot them.
Common warning signs
- The message creates urgency, such as "your account will be closed today"
- The sender address or phone number does not match the real company
- Links point to a strange web address when you hover or press and hold
- You are asked to confirm a password, PIN, or card number
- Unexpected attachments, invoices, or package delivery notices
- Spelling mistakes or a greeting like "Dear Customer"
Safe habits
- Never click links in unexpected messages. Open the company's app or type its web address yourself.
- Call the company using the number on your card or statement, not the one in the message.
- Turn on two-step verification for email and banking.
- Keep your phone and computer updated.
If you already clicked
1. Disconnect from the internet if something was downloaded. 2. Change the password for the affected account from a different, trusted device. 3. Call your bank if you shared card or account details. 4. Run a security scan, or ask us to check the device.
